KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun today welcomed a delegation from International Crisis Group (ICG) at Kuomintang headquarters, where both sides exchanged views on the evolving international situation and cross-strait relations.
During the meeting, Chairwoman Cheng shared the outcomes of her recent visit to Beijing and emphasized that the KMT remains committed to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait through adherence to the “1992 Consensus,” opposition to Taiwan independence, and continued cross-strait dialogue. She stressed that peaceful relation remains possible and that all sides should work to avoid military conflict. Chairwoman Cheng also reiterated that Taiwan should maintain strategic initiative in cross-strait affairs and not become a bargaining chip in great power competition.
On defense, Chair Cheng stated that the KMT firmly supports our national defense and backs concrete, defense-oriented arms procurement with the U.S. At the same time, she emphasized that defense budgets must remain transparent and subject to normal annual budget oversight in order to prevent corruption and misuse of resources. She added that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait cannot rely solely on increased arms sales, but must also be pursued through political dialogue and reconciliation.
Looking ahead, Chair Cheng discussed her upcoming visit to the U.S. and expressed hope for direct engagement with various sectors in Washington to improve understanding of the KMT’s positions and address misunderstandings and inaccurate narratives. She concluded by sharing her vision for Taiwan’s future as an increasingly internationalized hub for global and cross-strait talent, technology, and innovation, playing a proactive role in promoting peace and prosperity in East Asia.
