KMT Chairperson Cheng Li-wun held a cordial exchange with Lutz Güllner, Head of the European Economic and Trade Office. Both sides discussed regional security, Cross-Strait relations, and various areas of bilateral cooperation.

Mr. Güllner began by reaffirming the EU’s longstanding commitment to maintaining peace and stability on the European continent. He stated that the EU firmly upholds the United Nations Charter and opposes any act of aggression by one state against another. He also reiterated the EU’s consistent policy towards cross-strait relations.

On EU-Taiwan relations, he noted that Taiwan and the EU enjoy a solid economic and trade relationship. The EU is Taiwan’s largest source of foreign investment, exceeding the combined totals from the United States and Japan. He expressed hope that Taiwan and the EU will continue to expand and deepen cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, and other strategic sectors.

Chair Cheng stated that there is much Taiwan can learn from the EU’s experiences and values, including constitutional democracy, education, social welfare, and animal rights. She also noted the EU’s contributions to energy conservation and carbon reduction, areas that Taiwan likewise prioritizes. She expressed hope that both sides would pursue closer exchanges and cooperation across these fields.

Chair Cheng particularly emphasized that European integration represents a remarkable achievement of human wisdom. She said that both sides of the Taiwan Strait should draw inspiration from the EU’s spirit and seek reconciliation through innovative approaches. Germany and France, once long-standing adversaries on the battlefield, ultimately chose to set aside hostility and move toward cooperation; the differences across the two sides of the Strait, she believes, can and should be resolved through peaceful means.

Chair Cheng concluded by expressing the KMT’s strong support for broader and deeper cooperation between Taiwan and the EU. Both sides look forward to maintaining close communication in the future.
